Aquarium at Rockport Harbor—Your group will gain knowledge, educational and entertaining visitor experience that promotes understanding, conservation, and stewardship of marine resources and environments; living exhibits focusing on local species; and static and changing displays providing opportunities for the visitors of all ages to learn about research and management of coastal resources. Rockport Center for the Arts boasts a state-of-the-art main gallery. The two parlor galleries are now dedicated entirely to the works of its member artists, while the main gallery allows the Center to broaden its horizons. The invited and curated exhibitions in this gallery include the works of regional, national, and internationally acclaimed artists. Explore an estuary in downtown Rockport. The Bay Education Center tells the story of an estuary with interactive exhibits that reveal the ecological and economic importance of the Mission-Aransas Estuary. The exhibits also highlight the role that the Mission-Aransas NERR plays in estuary research, education, and protection. “Science on a Sphere” (SOS) is another attraction at the Center. Created by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, SOS uses computers and video projectors to display global data on a giant sphere. FMI 361-749-6832
The Texas Maritime Museum has been educating visitors about the rich maritime history of Texas for over 20 years! View Texas history from exploration and settlement, to boatbuilding and shipbuilding, to sports and commercial fishing, and finally the search for offshore oil and gas. The museum also hosts the annual Rockport Festival of Wine and Food, held every Memorial Day weekend! The activities based on the age of your group can be planned by the Texas Martime’s Educator Coordinator if you give her a heads up the age, group size and date. This is the perfect place for your meeting, outdoor classroom, reunion or party. The Rockport Beach is excited to be the only consecutive Blue Wave Beach in Texas for years. The Blue Wave campaign is America’s first environmental certification for beaches. Our Blue Wave Beach is litter free, is handicap accessible, has public restroom facilities, picnic sites, children play areas, swimming, fishing, public boat ramp and is a bird sanctuary. 10 AM - Begin your five-star learning experience with a tour of the three indoor galleries and outdoor sculpture garden at Rockport Center for the Arts. Explore a wide variety of local imagery created by artists from Aransas County in the Members' Galleries alongside prestigious curated exhibits found in both the Main and Garden Galleries. After indulging your senses in two dimensions, step outside to partake in the exquisite view from our 10,000 square foot sculpture garden which hosts works by nationally and internationally acclaimed sculptors. You may wish to end your visit with a stop in our gift shop which boasts original gifts and mementos handmade by local artisans.
11 AM - Walk across the street to the Texas Maritime Museum for a tour and a treasure hunt of facts. You can create a fun fact finding game with questions and then go back and have a lesson about Texas seafairing exploration in their new education center. 1. Find the nickname for the Texas Scow Sloop. 2. Find the lure board on the 2nd floor. On the 2nd Floor of the museum, you will see examples of tools used to catch a variety of animals from the Gulf of Mexico. 3. Find the names of 4 types of fish that you can catch in the Gulf of Mexico.
12 PM - Have a picnic lunch at the cabanas in the Rockport Beach Park. Menus for boxed lunches can be provided. 1:30 PM - Learn about the redfish, drum, trout, shrimp and the marine life at the Aquarium at Rockport Harbor.
2:30 PM - End the day with a bang and see the Science on a Sphere, at the Bay education Center, one of only 2 in Texas. Pick the data set created by NASA that you want on the globe. Whether it be stars, tides, climate, hurricanes, satellites, rivers and salinity levels and many other great learning data sets that you can choose to show your students.
4 PM - Leave the 5 Star Edu-Tainment Harbor with an educational experience that you and the group will be talking about for days. We can plan several other activities that you may want to do in a couple of days. We can plan or assist you with getting speakers to come and talk to the group. Through our working relationships with TAMU-CC we may be able to bring over kayaks in Little Bay.
